Experts on Heating and Air Conditioning Repair in Raymore Explain the 4 Most Common HVAC Problems

A broken HVAC system is a cause of anxiety for many homeowners. If you were to need heating and air conditioning repair in Raymore, would you be able to understand what went wrong? You don’t have to be an HVAC expert to have a rudimentary understanding of common HVAC system problems.

#1 – Low A/C Refrigerant

Your air conditioner system cools by circulating refrigerant (often called freon) through your AC system in a closed loop. The cooling process begins when refrigerant is compressed by a compressor and run through a condenser (the condenser and compressor are both in the unit outside your house). Upon exiting the condenser, the refrigerant is forced through an expansion valve, which causes it to cool, and then travels through an evaporator coil inside your home or attic. The evaporator gets very cold, and a fan blows air over the evaporator coil and distributes cool air throughout your home via a system of ducts (the big tubes in your attic). After exiting the evaporator, the refrigerant is returned to the compressor, and the process begins again.

If refrigerant escapes from the tubing in your AC system (through a damaged O-ring or corroded tubing), the minimum amount of refrigerant will not be present in the system for adequate compression. Without compression and the subsequent expansion, cooling cannot occur.

#2 – Dirty Filters

A dirty or clogged filter will prevent your HVAC system from drawing air in and therefore blowing air out. This could be compared to what would occur if a curtain fell against the back of a box fan. The curtain would block the fan’s intake, and, despite the movement of fan blades, no air would be pushed out. Once the curtain is removed from the back of the fan (or the filter is replaced), air can circulate through again.

#3 – Dirty Condenser or Evaporator Coils

Your air conditioning system relies on the AC condenser to remove heat generated during the compression process and the AC evaporator to cool the air forced through the evaporator coil. If either becomes excessively dirty, air cannot be moved through them, and they fail to fulfill their function.

#4 – Malfunctioning Thermostat

Your home’s thermostat relies on a series of sensors to determine your home’s ambient temperature, turn your air conditioner compressor on and off, and turn the fan inside your HVAC system on and off. If your thermostat fails at any of these functions, it will cause your system to malfunction and either fail to heat or cool your home or heat or cool your home too much.
